STC is the largest service provider in the Middle East and North Africa, with an international presence in nine countries. It not only leads the consumer data market in KSA but also leads the enterprise and government ICT markets in the region. The company has a huge responsibility to those who rely on its network; today and into the future.

In the world of technology the future is advancing towards us at immense speed. Keeping up with the constant growth in demand for digital services and connectivity requires a network that matches global expectations. Keeping ahead is an even more exacting requirement. The challenge for STC is to anticipate growth, to plan for network capabilities that will scale to enable Vision 2030, and to enable the knowledge-based economy of KSA.

Problems solved

  • Over 70% capacity utilization
  • Robust connectivity with rest of world
  • Avoid poor connections
  • Ensure future-proofed network for KSA economic growth, supported by Internet of Things
  • Preparedness to handle increasing demand for robust, fast, and secure data services in the age of Big Data

  • Increased internet capacity (from 1.5T to 2.8T)
  • Expand services capability
  • Further improve customer experience
  • Maintain the company’s leadership in telecommunications within KSA and beyond
  • Meet increased demand for fixed and mobile internet traffic
  • Further enable the Government’s digital transformation plans

Anticipating the demands of a digital society

STC had identified a prime concern as a result of its sustained growth and success. As more government departments were progressing with digital transformation plans, and migrating systems to the cloud to support mobile workforces and deliver improved services to more citizens through a website presence, more internet capacity was needed. Over 70% of existing capacity was already being used; the future beckoned.

Further pressure on internet services was coming from the enterprise sector with the proliferation of conferencing services using video, and the need to collect, make sense of, and store data securely.

STCS was selected after an open bid process against other systems integrators; a process which STC imposes strictly to ensure that projects are not allocated simply on the basis of corporate allegiance.

The solution:

Total refresh, totally future-proof

STCS engineers undertook a detailed assessment of the existing network to evaluate where critical enhancements were needed. STCS follows a strictly technology-agnostic approach to ensure that the most advanced and appropriate technology is used in any customer scenario. In selecting a partner that could bring innovation value as well as technology to the project, STCS recommended Juniper Networks’* MX Series Universal Edge Routers and their PTX Series Transport Routers.

This opened the way for a software-defined networking approach to the project to reduce overall costs and accelerate project timelines.

The capacity increase that STC needed was mainly a case of upgrading the company’s internet gateway. For that to be effective there were a number of associated challenges to ensure that the network itself was robust at every point.

This required attention to the network from end to end; from the submarine fiber cable connections through to the data centers via a landing station and routers and on through to the internet gateway:

The innovation roadmap: STCS produced detailed complete design documentation and reviewed, and approved Juniper’s design deliverables.

An infrastructure for growth: STCS introduced new landing stations in Salamah and Yanbu to connect to new submarine cables to upgrade the internet capacity.

Data services empowering global competiveness: STCS also introduced two new data centres to expand the client’s internet services capability, such as providing Google services.

Solid foundations for social, cultural and economic progress

The STC network has upgraded internet capacity of 2.8T from its previous 1.5T maintaining its leadership in the service provider market by providing best internet experience for its customers in government, business and in the consumer market. With this comprehensive coverage, fixed-line carriers get end-to-end assurance that their data services will be up and running 24x7x365.

STCS, working with Juniper as a partner, has equipped STC for the future, enabling STC to support the national vision of sustainable economic growth.

Juniper are a long-standing STCS partner; one of many specialist innovation leaders in the STCS community of partners who collectively represent the latest technology available.
